Rocks Jewellers Singles 2017/18 – Event 7 Results

3 weeks later than scheduled after the ‘Beast from the East’ snows forced cancellation Event 7 finally got underway on Sunday 25th March with 36 bowlers competing.

The cut for the finals in the Scratch Division was Paddy Dunne (1188) with Alan McDonnell (1195) in 3rd, Alan Bride (1212) in 2nd and Paul Stott Jnr (1247) leading the field with a 249 average.

Jason Byrnes (1213 incl Hcp) led qualifying in the Handicap division with Nickey O’Malley 1205, Paddy Gibbons 1196 and Tom Byrne 1190 took the final position when he rolled a 300 game in the last game of qualifying.

Scratch Semi Finals & Final

In the first Scratch Semi Final Paul Stott Jnr – 206 just edged out Paddy Dunne – 203 while Alan McDonnell struck out for the last 6 balls to beat Alan Bride by 269 to 234 to go thru to the Final.

The Final proved to be a very tight affair with Alan taking an early lead only to be put under pressure to close out the match when Paul struck out for a 235 forcing Alan to mark in the 10th frame and get at least 9 in the fill frame. Alan’s first ball failed to strike leaving the 7 pin which he spared and then rolled a strike to shoot 237 giving him a 2 pin victory.

Handicap Semi Finals & Final

Jason Byrnes took the first Handicap Semi Final with a 228 to 205 win over Tom Byrne. The second Semi Final was closely fought throughout Nickey O’Malley 239 just managing to hold off  a late charge from Paddy Gibbons who doubled in the 10th frame to post a 236.

Jason ran out a comprehensive winner when he struck on 8 of the first 10 frames beating Nickey who never got going in the Final by 273 to 166.

Congratulations to Jason Byrnes on his first win of the season and to  Alan McDonnell who is having a great season in the Rock Jewellers Singles, Alan has qualified for the Finals in 5 of the 7 events so far and now winning his 3rd event he is still the only multiple winner.

Rocks Jewellers Singles 2017/18 – Event 6 Results

February’s Rocks Jewellers Singles event did not produce quite the same high scoring as the previous month as players had to work a little harder to find strikes on an oil pattern with less volume than previous months.

Scores could still be found, however, as proven by Barry Foley’s leading total of 1197 in qualifying. He was joined in the Scratch finals by Paul Stott Jnr (1175), Joe Clancy (1139) and Paddy Dunne (1135).

In the Handicap section, Fran Puzzouli (1180) took the top seed position, with Gareth Shannon (1155), Paddy Gibbons (1151) and Sheron Sweeney (1144) making up the semi-final line-up.

The semi-finals threw up little in the way of surprises as the number one and two seeds won their matches in both sections to set up a face-off between the best players of the day in both sections.

Scratch Semi Finals

  1. Barry Foley 259 .v. Paddy Dunne 193
  2. Paul Stott Jnr. 223 .v. Joe Clancy 185

Handicap Semi Finals

  1. Fran Puzzouli 215 .v. Sheron Sweeney 210
  2. Gareth Shannon 257 .v. Paddy Gibbons 232

In truth both Finals played out in much the same fashion as the semi-finals, with the top seeds always in control and never really looking like they were going to allow the lower seed to put the pressure on them and snatch the victory away from them. In the end the top players took home the winner’s prizes after another great round of action in the Rocks Jewellers Singles.

Scratch Final

Barry Foley 226 .v. Paul Stott Jnr. 180

Handicap Final

Fran Puzzouli 257 .v. Gareth Shannon 180

Another good turnout this month with 40 bowlers, congratulations to the winners Barry Foley (Scratch Division) and Fran Puzzouli (Handicap Division), PJ Shine (Rocks Jewellers Earrings Raffle Winner) all the finalists and everyone who played. Also special mention must go to Colm Cloake who bowled a perfect 300 game in game two of qualifying!

Brendan Healy took pole position in the Handicap division with 1211 incl. Hcp, closely followed  by Paddy Dunne on 1197, Fran Puzzuoli on 1194 and P J Shine on 1169.

The Semi Finals in the Scratch & Handicap divisions were cut and dried affairs

Handicap Semi Finals

  2. Paddy Dunne 189 .v. Fran Puzzuoli 237

Both Finals proved to be much tighter matches with P J Shine doubling late in the game to win his first Handicap event of the season by 215 to Fran’s 192.

In the Scratch division Alan Mc Donnell took an early lead and despite Paul’s late run of strikes Alan managed to secure his second Scratch event of the season by 240 to Paul’s 226.

Another great turnout with 47 bowlers, congratulations to the winners Alan McDonnell (Scratch Division) and P. J. Shine (Handicap Division), all the finalists and everyone who played.

Rocks Jewellers Singles 2017/18 – Event 4 Results

Rocks 2017-2018 Event 4 Winners

December’s event was not only the highest scoring event this season (24 bowlers achieving par or better) but also the best supported with 54 bowlers contesting Scratch & Handicap divisions.  Sean McDonnell (1221) & Alan Bride (1221) led the way in the Scratch section along with Chris Sloan (1202) all shooting 240+  averages. Kellie McDonnell finished strongly with a 235 game to lead the Handicap qualification with 1239 incl. Hcp (216 Avg).

Kellie McDonnell was put under pressure by Brendan Healy in the early part of the first Handicap semi-final but rallied with 5 strikes in a row at the end to win through to the final in a high scoring match with 275 to Brendan’s 252. The second semi-final was a very low scoring affair with Colm Cloake just managing to edge past Mario Batol by 178 to Mario’s 167. The Final was another tight match with  Kellie digging in win her first event of the season by 247 to Colm’s 223.

Alan Bride had shot a perfect game (300) in qualifying  and looked like he would do so again in the first Scratch semi-final against Chris Sloan only to be stopped by a stubborn 10 pin late in the game. Alan progressed to the final 268 to Chris’s 199. In the other semi-final Sean McDonnell & Matthew Kestell traded places throughout the match with a double at the right time giving Sean the win 236 to Matthew’s 223. The Scratch Final was another tight affair that saw Sean come out on top by 227 to Alan’s 210.

Congratulations to the winners Sean McDonnell (Scratch Division) and Kellie McDonnell (Handicap Division) and all the finalists.

Rocks Jewellers Singles 2017/18 – Event 3 Results

Rocks 2017-18 Round 3 Image

The 3rd event of the season saw another great turnout with 43 bowlers contesting the Scratch and Handicap sections. Alan Bride (1221) and Paul Chandler (1203) set a blistering pace in the Scratch section both with 240+ averages. Joe Clancy led the Handicap qualification with 1196 incl. Hcp (211 Avg).

Neither Alan Bride nor Paul Chandler could maintain their qualifying pace in the Scratch semi finals, with Paul losing to Alan McDonnell 180 to 212, and Alan Bride, who even coverted the 7-10 split during the match against Nickey O’Malley losing out by 191 to 244 to set up a replay of the season opening Scatch Final. Once again this Final was a very close match with never more than a spare between the players. A double at the right time gave Nickey the win 207 to Alan’s 201 to reverse the result from the opening Scratch Final match of the season.

Joe Clancy came out striking in his Handicap semi final match and never looked back defeating Mark Moore 292 to 227. In the other semi final Mario Batol edged past Sean Walsh 233 to 222. Another strong performance by Joe in the Final ensured victory by 255 to Mario’s 183.

Congratulations to the winners Nickey O’Malley (Scratch Division) and Joe Clancy (Handicap Division) and all the finalists.
