Rocks Jewellers Singles 2018/19 – Event 6 Results

The Kegel Easy Street oil pattern once again proved to be anything but an “Easy” condition for the 34 bowlers in this event with only 5 of them managing a 200 average or more in what was to be the lowest scoring Rocks Jewellers event for the past couple of seasons.

Joe Clancy posted an 1109 (221 Avg) to top the scoring on the day but was beaten in the 1st Scratch semi-final by Jason Byrnes (202 Avg qualifying) 201 to Jason’s 248. In the 2nd semi-final, a very low scoring match, Alan Bride just managed to take the match by 186 to Colm Cloake’s 179. Jason was able to continue his good form from the semi-final and pulled ahead of Alan in the final frames to take his first title of the season by 245 to Alan’s 226.

Dymphna Kestell who led the Handicap qualifying with 1171 couldn’t shake off a persistent Nickey O’Malley in the 1st Handicap semi-final where Nickey closed the game out well to win by 226 to Dymphna’s 207. In the 2nd semi-final Bernie Moriarty took control from the very start of her match against Sheron Sweeney and took the match by 231 to Sheron’s 200. The final was another low scoring match with Bernie failing to convert a couple of easy spares early on to give Nickey a comfortable win by 207 to Bernie’s 183.

30 Years of Bowling

Sunday, January 13th 2019, saw the last bowling event at SuperDome, before its sale and closure. The many heartfelt message posted on facebook is testament to bowlers’ initial shock and most importantly, the warmth of feeling for Tony, Lisa, Ian, Nuala and all the wonderful staff at SuperDome. Rocks Jewellers Singles 2018/19 – Event 5 Results

The first Rocks Jewellers event of 2019 gives the bowlers the chance to play on the oil pattern that will be used for the European Bowling Tour ranked Irish Open which starts on the 13th of January in Leisureplex Stillorgan. With the exception of Barry Foley who lit up the lanes firing a qualifying average of 249, the remaining qualifying scores were well below the field average for the season to date with only 6 players making a 200 average or more.

Both Scratch semi-finals were well contested with Barry Foley having to strike out in semi-final 1 to shut out Alan McDonnell by 226 to Alan’s 219. Semi-final 2 was a case of who could carry and unfortunately for Jason Byrnes (who finished strongly in qualifying to take 2nd place) he was unable to match Alan Bride’s strike rate that gave him the match by 245 to Jason’s 212.

Alan was able to maintain his form in the Final and had a comfortable win over Barry by 244 to 222 to give him his 3rd win of the season.

The 1st Handicap semi-final was a struggle for both players with splits a plenty in the first half, after which Dymphna Kestell found her form and took the match with a 194 against Kathleen Lyons who scored 173. P J Shine played very consistently in the 2nd semi-final to take the match 222 to 200 from Paddy Gibbons. In the Final both players upper their game and it was a much tighter match right up to the 9th frame when P J took control with a couple of strikes into the 10th frame and closed out the match by 242 to Dymphna’s 228 to take his first title of the season.

Historic Day as Irish Bowler Wins First Ever Medal at World Championships

Irish tenpin bowler Christopher Sloan today finished in 3rd place at the World Men’s Bowling Championships in Hong Kong, securing Ireland’s first ever medal at an Adult World Championships.

After qualifying for the finals in 6th place, Christopher then defeated defending World Champion, Francois Lavoie of Canada, two-games-to-one in a tight last-16 contest, before again winning his quarter-final match two-games-to-one against Seonghoi Koo of Korea.

With Ireland’s first ever World Championships medal secured, the focus turned to becoming the first Irish bowler to make the final. But standing in Christopher’s way was American PBA Tour superstar Kyle Troup.

The semi-final was tight all the way through, with the momentum swinging one way and then another, but unfortunately for the Irish fans it was Troup who came out on top, two-games-to-zero.

Both games were close all the way to the end, but the American managed to get over the line in both games, bringing Christopher’s inspiring run to an end.

The World Bowling Men’s Championships, which takes place every four years, saw 265 competitors take part this year, representing 46 different nations.

Christopher, who is from Swords in Co. Dublin, will be in action back home after Christmas, with a busy January schedule including the ALSAA Open and the EBT Irish Open, two of the biggest tournaments of the year in Ireland.

Irish Bowler Fighting for World Championships Title

Irish tenpin bowler Christopher Sloan has qualified in 6th place for the finals of the World Men’s Bowling Championships in Hong Kong.

The team event, in which 6 bowlers represent each nation, saw 46 countries travel to Hong Kong to compete over 10 days in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team of five events.

Each player played 24 games in total in the tournament, and after these games the top 24 individual bowlers qualified for the Master finals.

Christopher (24), from Swords in Co. Dublin, put on a stellar performance to qualify for the Master in 6th place, and in the process earned a bye to the Round of 16, which takes place on Wednesday Dec 5th at 4 am Irish time.

Christopher will take on defending World Champion Francois Lavoie of Canada in the Round of 16, with the match following a best-of-three games format (first player to win 2 games advances).

Should he advance into the Round of 8, Christopher would be just one match away from the medal rounds, and two matches away from the Masters Final.

NDP Grand Prix 2018 – Results

Congratulations to all players who took part in the 2018 NDP Grand Prix and to the organisers and staff of Leisureplex Coolock for another successfull event.

This year saw the Ladies section being won by Carol Catchpole (Team Ireland) while the Mens was won by Jack Bruton (Juniors Under 16).  The overall champion playoff was won by Carol Catchpole.

Junior Irish Open 2018

Play commenced in the 2018 Junior Irish Open at 3pm on Friday November 2nd with an additional Overflow squad comprising 18 players from various catergories.  Following this at 6pm, 48 players competed in Squad 1 bringing the first days play to an end.

Saturday sees play coommence at 8:30 with squads 2 and continues throughout the day.
