In Memory of Stan by John R. Wilson on behalf of the ITBA

I must have known Stan through bowling for at least 30 years, if not more. We first met in Stillorgan Bowl, the date is irrelevant, because a friendship developed as we met and bowled in various competitions, up and down the country. Stan loved his bowling and hated missing any chance to bowl competitively (as we all do). I had the good fortune to have bowled, successfully with Stan, both home and away. We bowled in Hamburg (ESBC) in Florida (Florida International Bowling Tournament), France (the Paris New Year Singles & Doubles) and on the Senior Triple Crown Team in Jersey. We had some great times, made lots of international friends and nearly always came away with medal, trophy or prize.

Stan’s peak in bowling came when he out-bowled everyone in the Final and won the Senior Championships in Coolock (2001).

My main memories of Stan are:

  • He was always looking for the perfect ball fit for his hand, and kept Barry busy in the Proshop.
  • He would never refuse to bowl in any competition and would bowl as a pacer, if he could not play in the competition.
  • Stan was always in good spirits, loved a bit fun and chat and I’ve never known him to have a bad word to say about anybody.

Stan served on the ITBA Senior Sub-Committee and the Technical Committee for many years.

Stan was very supportive and gave me some work-choices advice that changed my career and life, for which I never forget.

It is hard to believe your gone Stan. May your memory last a long time.

Change USBC Ball Regulations

Following three years of research on how technology has affected the sport of tenpin bowling, the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) released a statement in April 2018 regarding proposed new ball drilling and bowling ball coverstock specifications that would assist in sustaining the playing field both now and into the future.

On June 16th, the USBC released a further statement noting that their Equipment and Specifications Committee have revised the implementation dates for the new bowling ball specifications to begin from 1st August 2018 on a two year phased basis.

The Irish Tenpin Bowling Association has received a number of inquiries recently regarding these statements and the ITBA’s position on whether it is to adopt the USBC new rules.  The ITBA would like to confirm that it is awaiting information on the matter from World Bowling who have been discussing the suggested changes to ball specifications.

Pending further clarifications from World Bowling, the Irish Tenpin Bowling Association would like to advise there will be no changes made to the existing ITBA Rules regarding ball weights (drilling) until World Bowling confirms its stance in regard to the matter. The ITBA will then review the information and release a further statement and any changes to the ITBA Rules in regard to ball weights (drilling).
